The following photos were taken earlier in March of 2018.

Joe Nunez (a really talented fashion/wedding photographer and a really great friend) and I went to MonaLiza Studios in Brooklyn. I technically dragged him with me to the event.

They were having their first ever editorial night and I always like to show up at anything "first". They had 23 models, 7 sets with DJs, bar and all the props I can think of. It was a really great experience. I got to meet amazing models and few photographers.

It really provided a creative space for both models and photographers.

CONS:

  1. Everyone will most likely end up with the same photo if everyone is shooting from the same side of the models. You can fix this by editing your photos differently OR looking for a different prop for them.
For me, I pretty much just looked for an open spot behind the models and tried to find a different angle. It's doable.
  2. It smelled like weed. I personally am not a fan but if it's your thing, I'm not judging you.
  3. The inside of the studio was really dark. If you don't ave a wide aperture lens, good luck. You will end up with unfocused and grainy photos. I combated this by only using a manual lens with an aperture of 1.7
  4. They had changing colored gel lights that only lasted 5-10 seconds. This means you need to adjust your settings every time the light changes. Like I said before, use a manual lens if you can. Just let the models know to hold the pose longer.
  5. It's hard to get models to hold their poses because there are other photographers who want to pose them.
  6. You don't know who's a model since everyone was dressed to impress.
  7. I felt like every one felt some sort of entitlement because they had the expensive gear OR they have thousands of followers on IG. One guy even brought his own beauty light and reflector.

Like I said, it was a good experience and would definitely do it again. If you're interested, search 'Editorial Night" on Eventbrite. I know they charge about $20/ticket now but I think it's worth it if you need a lot of content.
